OneWeb

OneWeb Satellite

Currently the connectivity is accessible in all areas over 50 degrees latitude. Latency is less than 50 milliseconds, and speeds are 100 Mbps or more.

OneWeb, a key player in the global communications landscape, is on a mission to create a network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver high-speed internet connectivity worldwide. Their objective is to ensure swift, reliable connectivity to every corner of the globe, with anticipated speeds reaching as high as 200 Mbps.

The company's financial backbone consists of major investors like the UK government, Bharti Global, and SoftBank, each of which has injected $500 million into OneWeb. In a significant move in July 2022, OneWeb declared its intention to merge with Eutelsat, a prominent France-based satellite operations firm. This fusion, set to be finalized by mid-2023, represents a groundbreaking amalgamation of Eutelsat's 36 geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites and OneWeb's burgeoning array of LEO satellites.

By January 2023, OneWeb successfully launched 542 satellites, with additional launches following that date, aiming for a total constellation of 648 satellites. The company is led by CEO Neil Masterson, a former executive and co-COO at Thomson Reuters, who assumed the helm at OneWeb in October 2020.

OneWeb primarily targets government and military infrastructure, businesses, and governmental organizations with its internet services. Rather than offering satellite internet directly to consumers, the company is building a network of partnerships with telecom companies, broadband providers, and other entities that provide internet services. For now, OneWeb's services are concentrated mainly on European and Asian markets, while its presence in the US is growing through alliances with American telecom providers, including AT&T.
